Tips to Keep Hair Color From Fading

Whether you dye from the box or spend hundreds at a trip to the salon, that fabulous head of hair you were once rocking seems to fade -- literally -- as the weeks go by. Touching up roots every 4 to 8 weeks is a necessity, but having to go in and re-dye because your color has dwindled, or because your mane has morphed into a brassy or ashy catastrophe, is no fun.

Fact: Water is the ultimate culprit when it comes to the above hair dye dilemmas. Since porous hair -- which becomes even more porous once dyed -- soaks up water, it fades your originally fabulous, lux head of hair.

Your best bet, and any stylist will tell you this, is to reduce the amount you wash your hair. Once every two to three days is sufficient. Just throw on a shower cap when you shower and re-style your hair afterward.

To make your 'do last a bit longer, use a dry shampoo to keep greasy roots at bay. I'm a big fan of Jonathan Product's award-winning and much beloved Green Rootine Dry Shampoo ($19), pictured at top left. It comes in three shades and is eco-friendly, to boot.

Another way to make your original dye job last longer is to use shampoos, conditioners and products that are specifically formulated for color-treated hair. They contain ingredients that nourish processed locks and keep your hair color as vibrant as it was the day you dyed.
